Union Government Allocates ₹1,400 Crore to West Bengal Under PMAY Initiative

Kolkata, Nov 30 (NationPress) The Union government has allocated ₹1,400 crore to West Bengal under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) initiative, coming just a day after the Trinamool Congress administration claimed that the Centre has been indifferent, according to sources.

This news emerged shortly after the treasury bench introduced a motion in the state Assembly on Friday, accusing the Union government of withholding Central funds from various centrally sponsored schemes during the ongoing winter session of the House.

State government sources noted that the previous release of central funds under the PMAY initiative occurred in 2022. Numerous allegations of irregularities have surfaced regarding the distribution of houses under this scheme in West Bengal, with several protests erupting in various regions over the past few months.

On Friday, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, charged the state government and the ruling Trinamool Congress with engaging in significant irregularities concerning house allocations under PMAY.

Adhikari further alleged that the Trinamool's panchayat chief in Beldanga, located in Murshidabad district, had received allocation for 17 houses through this scheme.

According to established guidelines, the Union government covers 60% of the expenses related to the PMAY initiative, while the state government is responsible for the remaining 40%.

During an event in October this year, Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated a new passenger terminal building and Maitri Dwar at the Land Port in Petrapole, North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, where he accused the state of significant financial discrepancies in the execution of various central schemes.

Shah alleged that the funds allocated through different centrally-sponsored schemes, including MGNREGA and PMAY, fail to reach the true beneficiaries, asserting that only individuals associated with the Trinamool Congress benefit from these funds.
