Will Union Minister Advocate for Odisha SEBC Communities' Inclusion in Central OBC List?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, Dec 23 (NationPress) Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has addressed a letter to D. Virendra Kumar, the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, urging his immediate involvement in ensuring that 108 communities recognized under the state list of Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) are included in the central list of Other Backward Classes (OBC).
In his correspondence, Pradhan emphasized, “I wish to bring to your esteemed attention a crucial matter regarding the discrepancies between the State and Central lists of Other Backward Classes (OBC) in Odisha. Numerous communities acknowledged in the State List of SEBC by the Government of Odisha are still not represented in the Central OBC list.”
The Union Minister pointed out that this disparity has resulted in ‘administrative ambiguities’ and ‘interpretational challenges’ for individuals from these communities, particularly when moving to different states or when attempting to access central government services, educational institutions, or employment opportunities.
“Odisha has a significant SEBC demographic, and their omission from the Central OBC list hinders their ability to access uniform reservation benefits and welfare schemes that are available on a national scale. Therefore, the inclusion of these communities in the Central OBC list is essential to achieve parity between State and Central frameworks, while also promoting social justice and inclusive development,” added Pradhan in his communication.
Additionally, the Union Education Minister provided a comprehensive list of the 108 SEBC communities proposed for inclusion in his letter for proper evaluation and necessary action.
“Considering the gravity of the situation, I request your personal involvement to address this matter, ensuring these communities are incorporated into the Central OBC list, thus facilitating equitable access to reservation benefits and welfare programs. This will significantly foster educational and economic progress among historically marginalized groups,” urged Pradhan.
It is also noteworthy that Pradhan recently wrote to Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, requesting his direct intervention for the prompt reconstitution of the Odisha State Commission for Backward Classes (OSCBC), which has remained inactive since its tenure concluded on January 3, 2024.
