UP Assembly Session Adjourned Indefinitely Amid SP Protests

Lucknow, Dec 19 (NationPress) The sessions of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly were suspended indefinitely on Thursday due to disturbances instigated by Samajwadi Party (SP) legislators. The uproar was sparked by a comment made by Home Minister Amit Shah concerning Dr B.R. Ambedkar, the esteemed architect of the Indian Constitution.

SP members entered the Assembly carrying a portrait of Dr Ambedkar and chanting slogans, leading to a disruption. Despite numerous calls for order from Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana, the SP legislators continued their protests. Amidst the turmoil, the supplementary budget was approved without any debate, leading to the Assembly's indefinite adjournment.

Finance Minister Suresh Khanna condemned the SP legislators, alleging that they were intentionally hindering the Assembly's operations. He stated, "Their intention was to disrupt proceedings and evade substantial discussion." The supplementary budget was unanimously passed, with the Speaker announcing its approval amidst the chaos.

The Speaker also commented on the Opposition's hesitation to discuss the Kumbh Mela, asserting, "The Kumbh is not part of the Opposition's agenda. They are unwilling to engage in this discussion. However, it is my responsibility to ensure that the House addresses the supplementary budget."

Discussing the immense significance of the Kumbh Mela, Finance Minister Khanna emphasized its cultural relevance. "Over 40 crore individuals are anticipated to participate in the Kumbh. Such a monumental event is unparalleled globally. Neglecting to discuss it is a disservice to our culture and Sanatani values," he remarked.

In contrast, SP MLA Atul Pradhan staged a protest outside the Assembly, sitting beneath Dr Ambedkar's statue located in Hazratganj. Pradhan had been removed from the session on Wednesday following a heated confrontation with the Speaker.

On the topic of Dr Ambedkar's legacy, Finance Minister Khanna asserted that the BJP has demonstrated the utmost respect for him by establishing Panch Teerth (five sacred sites) in his honor. "Conversely, the Opposition has shown disrespect towards Dr Ambedkar by altering the Preamble of the Constitution he authored," he added.

The Assembly Speaker reiterated the importance of honoring Dr Ambedkar's contributions while urging the Opposition to concentrate on critical matters such as farmers' welfare. "Everyone holds Baba Saheb in high regard. The entire state is observing. I urge the Opposition to honor his legacy and participate in productive discussions."
