Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 5 (NationPress) Indian National Congress leader Salman Khurshid reiterated the party's strong objection to the actions taken by the United States in Venezuela, labeling them as a breach of international law and the UN Charter, posing a significant danger to global stability.
Khurshid, who previously served as External Affairs Minister and is currently the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Department of the Congress, expressed that, “The Congress expresses serious concern regarding the unilateral measures adopted by the United States in Venezuela over the last 48 hours, which violate the established principles of international law as outlined in the United Nations Charter and various international agreements.”
The Congress party has been vocal since the alleged “capture” of President Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela and his spouse, asserting that the U.S. actions threaten global stability.
Khurshid emphasized, “The principles of national sovereignty and peaceful coexistence are fundamental to the post-World War II global order. Any military action that breaches these principles without explicit approval from the United Nations risks reviving outdated statecraft rules and jeopardizes international stability.”
Furthermore, the Indian National Congress advocates for prioritizing the will of the Venezuelan populace and ensuring that the nation's resources are utilized for their benefit, as guaranteed by the principles of Permanent Sovereignty over Natural Resources.
Earlier, a colleague of Khurshid, Jairam Ramesh, who serves as the General Secretary for Communications of the party, voiced similar concerns regarding the recent events in the South American country.
In a statement on X on Sunday, Ramesh mentioned, “The INC expresses deep concern about the U.S. actions regarding Venezuela in the past 24 hours. The established principles of international law cannot be unilaterally disregarded.”
The Congress's response to these international developments coincided with protests organized by Left parties at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Sunday.
The leadership of the CPI(M) condemned the United States for what they termed as “imperialist military aggression” against Venezuela, calling for a global outcry and urging the Indian government to adopt a clear and assertive stance against the actions.
Protesters accused the U.S. of attacking Venezuela to seize control of its oil resources.
