Varanasi, Jan 15 (NationPress) The construction of three stations for India’s inaugural public transport ropeway in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi has reached completion, and trial preparations are set to commence shortly.
Out of a total of five stations, the construction of the Cantt, Vidyapeeth, and Rath Yatra stations has been finalized. The trial phase is anticipated to begin within a month and will span approximately 1.5 months.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated this ropeway project on March 23, 2023, with an estimated project cost of around Rs 650 crore, marking it as a significant aspiration of the Prime Minister. Work on the remaining two stations is still ongoing, but completion of the entire project is expected soon.
According to Divisional Commissioner Koshalraj Sharma, the construction of the three ropeway stations is complete. Given the current work pace, it is estimated that the remaining work might take an additional three to four months. Nevertheless, there is optimism about meeting the scheduled completion timeline.
“We have established a comprehensive roadmap for completing this project within the stipulated timeframe, and work is ongoing as per that plan. Additionally, some other tasks are expected to commence within a month,” he stated.
The gondola service will operate at intervals of 1.5 to 2 minutes, accommodating up to 3,000 passengers per hour in one direction, totaling 6,000 passengers in both directions. The travel time from Godaulia to Cantt railway station is projected to be about 16 minutes. Approximately 150 trolley cars will operate at a height of 45 to 50 meters, with each trolley capable of carrying 10 passengers. The ropeway service will run for 16 hours daily, and its construction is being undertaken by a Swiss firm.
