Kolkata, Dec 27 (NationPress) In response to recommendations from the Election Commission of India (ECI), the Union Home Ministry has taken steps to enhance the security measures for West Bengal's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Manoj Agarwal.
According to sources within the CEO's office, Agarwal's security level has been elevated to the “Y” category, enabling him to receive protection from personnel of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF).
Additionally, the deployment of CAPF personnel will occur at the CEO’s office located in central Kolkata.
The ECI had urged the Union Home Ministry not only to enhance the CEO’s personal security but also to ensure CAPF presence at the office.
On Saturday, the Union Home Ministry approved both of the ECI's recommendations.
Y-category security signifies a notable standard of personal protection, typically involving around eight security personnel, including a couple of armed commandos, based on a threat assessment conducted by central agencies. The state police are tasked with executing the actual security measures, providing substantial cover with fewer personnel than the Z/Z+ categories but more than the X category.
“The CEO's enhanced security was deemed necessary due to ongoing protests by certain booth-level officers outside the CEO’s office in central Kolkata, primarily directed against Agarwal. Despite numerous warnings issued by the Commission, the Kolkata Police authorities had not taken sufficient measures to address this issue. Therefore, upgrading the CEO's security became essential and unavoidable,” noted an insider from the CEO’s office.
Interestingly, Agarwal has faced intense criticism from the ruling Trinamool Congress since assuming his role. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has publicly criticized Agarwal during her rallies, accusing him of past corrupt practices without directly referring to him by name.
Following the Chief Minister’s allegations, an association of booth-level officers affiliated with the Trinamool has organized ongoing protests and demonstrations in front of the CEO's office.
