Women Hold 73% of 2.68 Crore Homes Completed Under PMAY-G Initiative

New Delhi, Dec 17 (NationPress) As of December 13 this year, a remarkable 2.68 crore houses have been constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G). Out of these, 72.66 lakh homes are registered exclusively in the names of women, while 1.22 crore are co-owned by both wives and husbands.

This brings the total number of homes owned by women to 1.95 crore, which accounts for 73 percent of all houses completed under the PMAY-G, as informed in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

The guidelines for PMAY-G mandate that homes be sanctioned either in the names of women or jointly with their spouses, as stated by the Minister of State for Rural Development, Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, in a written response to the Lower House.

To promote women's empowerment, an advisory has been issued emphasizing that all homes under PMAY-G should include women members' names in the ownership details (either solely or jointly). If a house has already been sanctioned in a male member's name, the female member(s) may be added as secondary owners in the sanction letters, the minister elaborated.

The Ministry of Rural Development is actively working towards the goal of “Housing for All” in rural regions through the implementation of PMAY-G, which commenced on April 1, 2016. The initiative aims to assist eligible rural households, with an ambitious target of constructing 4.95 crore pucca houses equipped with basic amenities by March 2029.

Out of a total target of 3.33 crore houses designated for States and Union Territories, 3.22 crore houses have been sanctioned, and over 2.68 crore houses have already been completed, according to the minister.

Moreover, women beneficiaries of PMAY-G are linked with Self Help Groups (SHGs) to enhance their livelihood and employment prospects.

The minister also pointed out that the DAY-NRLM scheme helps these SHGs secure loans from banks, which members utilize for various purposes, including business development.

Since the program's inception, a total of 9.74 lakh crore in bank loans has been granted to women-led SHGs.

Furthermore, the DAY-NRLM has mobilized 10.05 crore rural households into 90.87 lakh SHGs across the nation.
