Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 1 (NationPress) — The government announced on Thursday that, from the total target of 4.14 crore houses designated for states and Union Territories, 3.86 crore houses have been sanctioned while 2.92 crore houses have been completed as of December 9, 2025.
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) stands as a pivotal initiative by the government, aiming to fulfill the vision of 'Housing for All' by constructing 4.95 crore pucca houses equipped with essential amenities by collaborating with other schemes. This goal targets all households without homes and those residing in kutcha or deteriorating houses in rural zones by 2029.
The original objective of the scheme was to support the building of 2.95 crore houses by March 2024.
On August 9, 2024, the Union Cabinet sanctioned an extension of the scheme to facilitate the construction of an additional 2 crore rural houses throughout the fiscal years 2024-25 to 2028-29. This decision was made to address the increasing housing demands due to a rise in rural family numbers, as stated by the Ministry of Rural Development.
Additionally, the PM-JANMAN scheme was also approved by the Union Cabinet to ensure the saturation of the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) families and settlements with fundamental facilities. Housing efforts under this scheme are incorporated within PMAY-G.
According to the ministry, as of December 9, 2025, 4,71,486 houses have been sanctioned and 2,42,811 houses completed across states and UTs. Furthermore, from January 1, 2025 to the present date, 1,24,204 houses have been sanctioned while 1,71,719 houses have been completed across the states and UTs.
The Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana–National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) was introduced in June 2011, aiming to alleviate poverty by helping economically weaker households gain access to meaningful self-employment and skilled wage employment opportunities.
As part of this initiative, the Lakhpati Didi program seeks to empower women to attain financial independence.
The ambition is to cultivate 3 crore Lakhpati Didis (women earning Rs 1 lakh or more annually) by assisting women in expanding their businesses, thereby fostering sustainable development throughout rural India.
To date, over 2 crore Self-Help Group (SHG) women have become Lakhpati Didis, as reported by the ministry.
Moreover, the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana has significantly enhanced rural connectivity, with more than 16,000 km of roads and over 900 bridges completed, the ministry concluded.
