Patna, July 13 (NationPress) The police in Bihar's Samastipur district apprehended a young man on Sunday for allegedly issuing threats to assassinate Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) President Chirag Paswan via social media, according to officials.
The individual, recognized as Mohammad Meraj, was taken into custody from the Teghra area in Begusarai.
Durgesh Dipak, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer-cum-Station House Officer of the cyber cell, affirmed the arrest, noting that Meraj had made the threat from a social media account named 'Tiger Miraj Idrisi' on July 20.
The incident came to light after YouTuber Daksha Priya interviewed Chirag Paswan, prompting Meraj, a follower of Daksha, to comment, 'On July 20, Chirag Paswan will be killed by me. I would blow him up using a bomb.'
Treating the death threat against Chirag Paswan with utmost seriousness, LJP Spokesperson Rajesh Bhatt filed a written complaint at the Patna Cyber Police Station, leading to an FIR based on a request from the party's Samastipur district president, Anupam Kumar, also known as Hira Singh.
In response to the complaint, the police initiated an investigation and traced Meraj to Teghra in Begusarai.
'We received the lead from another social media user's statement, who suggested that the individual threatening Chirag Paswan is mentally unstable. We quickly located that user and conducted a brief questioning session, which led us to the whereabouts of Mohammad Meraj in Begusarai,' stated the SDPO-cum-SHO.
'Consequently, we executed a raid and apprehended him in the Teghra locality. After initial questioning, Meraj has been handed over to the Patna Police for further investigation to determine the motive behind the threat and if he was acting under someone else's influence.'
This arrest has somewhat alleviated concerns regarding the safety of Chirag Paswan.
In light of the threat, LJP(RV) MP from the Jamui Assembly constituency, Arun Bharti, called for an increase in security for Chirag Paswan through a social media post.
Currently, Patna Police are interrogating Meraj to uncover more information related to the threats made against Union Minister Chirag Paswan.
