Is GPU Shortage Hindering India's AI Aspirations?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 5 (NationPress) Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chadha raised alarms in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday regarding a significant obstacle thwarting India's aspirations in Artificial Intelligence (AI). He emphasized that the fundamental issue is not a lack of funding, resources, or talent, but rather the scarcity of computational resources, especially Graphics Processing Units (GPUs).
Chadha pointed out that escalating GPU prices and global supply chain interruptions are critically restricting India's data center growth and initiatives to train advanced AI models.
Currently, India's GPU inventory is around 34,000, a number he deemed inadequate compared to the global demand necessary for developing state-of-the-art AI systems.
He urged the Minister of State for Science and Technology to provide concrete information on the government's objectives, schedules, and international collaborations aimed at ensuring reliable access to these essential computational resources.
In response, Minister Jitendra Singh acknowledged the concern, affirming that GPUs are central to AI development and related activities.
He elaborated that under the IndiaAI Mission, computing has been established as a dedicated vertical due to its critical significance. This initiative allows access to high-performance computing services through approved vendors, offering eligible users discounts of up to 40%.
For larger models needing extensive computing resources, such as those with 30 billion or 65 billion parameters, access is also being facilitated through additional channels.
Singh confirmed that the government is fully aware of the challenges and actively working to resolve them. He highlighted a pivotal initiative that opens the private sector to foster investments from non-governmental entities.
He mentioned that just the day before, the first call for proposals under this initiative had been announced to stimulate private projects.
Singh expressed optimism that these measures, combined with ongoing efforts, would position India to align with global standards while steadfastly pursuing the goal of leadership in AI.
