Kochi, May 13 (NationPress) India is set to embark on its inaugural manned deep ocean mission, Samudrayaan, anticipated to be launched by the close of 2026. This initiative represents a remarkable advancement in the nation's ocean exploration capabilities.

The mission aims to reach depths of 6,000 meters with the help of the homegrown submersible vehicle Matsya, as stated by Dr. Balaji Ramakrishnan, the Director of the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT).

Dr. Ramakrishnan shared these insights during the commencement of a five-day national training program focused on the significance of fisheries in the blue economy, hosted at the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) on Tuesday.

This mission will facilitate deep-sea exploration with a team of three scientists aboard the Matsya submersible.

Weighing in at 25 tonnes, this fourth-generation vessel is designed to endure extreme pressure and temperature conditions, boasting a titanium hull and developed exclusively using indigenous technology.

The NIOT, operating under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, serves as the primary agency overseeing the mission.

“This mission is poised to revolutionize India's deep-sea research, enabling the evaluation of both living and non-living marine resources, enhancing ocean observation, and potentially paving the way for deep-sea tourism,” remarked Dr. Ramakrishnan.

He also mentioned that a vital trial phase at 500 meters depth is scheduled for completion by year-end.

The descent and ascent processes are expected to take about four hours each. During this mission, the submersible will gather crucial biological and geological samples from the deep ocean, allowing scientists to investigate unique organisms and environmental conditions at such depths.

In a significant technological development, Dr. Ramakrishnan revealed the creation of Samudrajivah, an initiative aimed at enhancing large-scale offshore fish farming.

Currently in the demonstration phase, Samudrajivah features electronically monitored submerged fish cages designed for nutrient-rich deep-sea environments.

“Equipped with a variety of sensors, Samudrajivah can remotely track fish biomass, growth, movement, and water quality parameters. This technology has the potential to play a vital role in ensuring India's food security,” he stated.

The training program is a collaborative effort between CMFRI and Vijnana Bharati (VIBHA).

Dr. Grinson George, Director of CMFRI, stressed the importance of merging NIOT's technological advancements with CMFRI's marine research efforts.

“This collaboration is essential for nurturing a robust blue economy. There is also an urgent need to enhance mariculture activities, such as seaweed farming, and develop early warning systems for jellyfish and harmful algal blooms to benefit coastal communities,” he concluded.
