The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has activated a comprehensive, technology-driven monsoon preparedness plan across the Maha Mumbai Metro network — covering Lines 2A, 2B, 7, and 9 — ahead of the 2025 monsoon season, with artificial intelligence and round-the-clock surveillance at the core of its strategy. The move is aimed at ensuring uninterrupted and safe passenger services during heavy rainfall and adverse weather.

First Monsoon for Lines 2B and 9

This season carries added significance as Metro Lines 2B and 9 will be navigating their first operational monsoon. MMRDA Commissioner and Chairman Maha Mumbai Metro has directed all units to strengthen operational readiness, flood mitigation, infrastructure protection, emergency response, and inter-agency coordination across stations, depots, viaducts, and associated metro infrastructure.

AI-Powered Pantograph Monitoring

A flagship initiative this season is the AI-enabled Automated Pantograph Condition Monitoring System, deployed across Metro Lines 2A and 7. Using high-speed cameras and artificial intelligence, the system monitors train pantographs in real time, enabling early fault detection and predictive maintenance. Notably, inspection time has been slashed from nearly 30 minutes to just a few seconds per train — a transformation that directly improves fleet availability and reduces dependency on manual checks, particularly critical during heavy rainfall.

Surveillance, Flood Mitigation and Infrastructure Readiness

Across the 39 operational metro stations, 64 CCTV cameras have been deployed at each station, creating a network of 2,496 CCTV cameras in total. These support round-the-clock monitoring of passenger movement, platforms, concourses, and critical operational areas.

To address waterlogging risks, 30 emergency pumps have been positioned at vulnerable locations. Stormwater drains at stations, depots, and viaducts have been cleared of silt, vegetation, and obstructions. Viaduct cleaning has been completed across all operational sections to prevent rainwater accumulation.

On the electrical infrastructure front, preventive maintenance has been completed on 1,070 insulators across the metro network. Inspection and maintenance of 25 KV cables, current transformers, potential transformers, transformer bushings, and lightning arresters have been undertaken across operational corridors. Flood protection measures for Traction Sub-Stations have also been reinforced.

Standby Trains and 24x7 Disaster Control Room

Five standby trains have been positioned — three on the main line and two in depots — ready for immediate deployment during unforeseen disruptions. Backup systems have been kept on standby to minimise impact during power outages and extreme weather.

A dedicated 24x7 Disaster Control Room, activated from 25 May to 15 October, will serve as the central command hub for emergency coordination, complaint registration, and inter-agency communication with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), police, and state government departments. During orange and red alerts, the control room will be fully staffed by nodal teams. All rainfall-related incidents must be reported within one hour under the prescribed protocol. Dedicated metro coaches have also been earmarked to support the BMC Disaster Management Team during critical situations.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said: 'Through AI-enabled systems, 24x7 surveillance, flood mitigation measures and coordinated emergency response, we are strengthening Mumbai's metro network to deliver reliable services, rain or shine.'

Deputy Chief Minister and MMRDA Chairman Eknath Shinde noted that AI-based automated pantograph monitoring now enables technical faults to be detected within seconds, improving reliability and train availability during heavy rainfall. MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee said the integration of technology, data analytics, and on-ground engineering enables early risk detection, keeping the vision of 'Mumbai in Minutes' on track through the monsoon.

With Lines 2B and 9 entering their first rainy season and AI systems embedded across operations, Mumbai's metro network is positioning itself for a significant test of its monsoon resilience in the weeks ahead.
