PM Modi Highlights the ‘Genome India Project’ as a Pivotal Biotechnology Initiative for Viksit Bharat
On January 9 in New Delhi, PM Modi underscored the significance of the ‘Genome India Project’ as a transformative force in the nation's biotechnology sector, emphasizing its role in the vision for 'Viksit Bharat'.

New Delhi, Jan 9 (NationPress) The ‘Genome India Project’ signifies a pivotal shift in the biotechnology sector of the nation, with the integration of biotechnology and biomass forming a crucial element for the aspiration of 'Viksit Bharat', stated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.

While addressing a gathering of experts and scientists through a video message, PM Modi mentioned that the project received approval five years ago and that our scientists have worked tirelessly to complete it, overcoming the hurdles posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

More than 20 research institutions including IISc, IITs, CSIR, and DBT-BRIC have made significant contributions to this research endeavor. The genome sequences of 10,000 Indians are now accessible at the Indian Biological Data Centre.

PM Modi expressed optimism that this initiative would serve as a landmark achievement in the realm of biotechnology research and extended his congratulations to all parties involved.

“The Genome India Project is a significant milestone in the biotechnology revolution. This data will now be available to scientists and researchers, assisting scholars in comprehending India’s genetic landscape,” the Prime Minister emphasized.

Understanding the diverse nature of diseases is critical, necessitating an awareness of the genetic identity of the population to devise effective treatments.

PM Modi pointed out the pressing challenge of sickle cell anemia in tribal communities and the national mission aimed at addressing it.

He acknowledged that the issue may vary across regions, highlighting the need for comprehensive genetic studies to grasp the unique genomic characteristics of the Indian populace.

“This insight will facilitate the development of tailored solutions and effective medications for specific groups. The scope extends far beyond, with sickle cell anemia being just one illustration,” the Prime Minister added.

India’s Bio Economy has witnessed rapid growth over the last decade, escalating from $10 billion in 2014 to over $150 billion today.

The country is actively working to elevate its Bio Economy further and recently introduced the Bio E3 Policy.

“The Bio E3 policy is poised to position India as a leader in the global biotechnology arena, akin to the IT revolution,” PM Modi remarked.
