Rise in MBBS Seats to 1,18,137 and Surge in Medical Colleges to 780 by 2024: Government

New Delhi, Dec 7 (NationPress) India has witnessed extraordinary growth in medical education over the past decade. The number of medical colleges has more than doubled from 387 in 2013-14 to 780 in 2024-25, representing an impressive 102 percent increase, as stated by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in the Rajya Sabha.

In the same timeframe, MBBS seats have surged from 51,348 to 1,18,137, indicating a 130 percent increase.

Uttar Pradesh has experienced the most significant growth, with the number of medical colleges rising from just 30 in 2014 to 86 today. The state also leads in the increase of medical seats, which have escalated from 3,749 in 2014 to 12,425.

Maharashtra has expanded from 44 to 80 medical colleges, enhancing its MBBS seat capacity from 5,590 a decade ago to 11,845.

Telangana, which had no medical colleges in 2014, now boasts 65 colleges and offers 9,040 MBBS seats.

Additionally, a new medical college has been established in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Mizoram, and Nagaland, which previously had no medical colleges in 2013-14.

Rajasthan has also seen substantial growth, increasing from 10 colleges with 1,750 seats in 2013-14 to 43 colleges with 6,475 seats in 2024-25.

Madhya Pradesh has expanded from 12 colleges (1,700 seats) to 31 colleges (5,200 seats), while Chhattisgarh increased from five colleges (600 seats) to 16 colleges (2,455 seats).

Delhi has added three additional colleges, growing from seven to 10, with MBBS seats rising from 900 to 1,497.

Karnataka's medical college count has expanded from 46 to 73, while Tamil Nadu has increased its MBBS seats to 12,050 from 6,215.

Moreover, the Ministry has informed the Lok Sabha that a total of 90,794 posts are sanctioned for medical colleges across the country.
