How Did South Sudan’s Akot Thrive with SRM University’s Basketball Team?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jaipur, Dec 6 (NationPress) When Akot Becky Paul Macuei from South Sudan applied for a sports scholarship to pursue a B.Sc. in Biotechnology in India, she was uncertain if she could chase her basketball aspirations or if she would have to concentrate solely on her academics.
The 18-year-old was apprehensive that her ambition to become an international basketball player might be sidelined. However, she was pleasantly surprised by the vibrant basketball culture in Chennai and the encouragement provided by SRM University.
The SRM University women’s basketball team clinched the runner-up position in the Khelo India University Games Rajasthan 2025. Yet, it was their unity and enthusiasm for the game that set them apart, with Akot being a key player in their journey to the finals.
“Prior to my arrival, many thought there was no basketball culture in India, as the nation is predominantly known for cricket. But I was astonished by the support I received upon joining my team,” Akot shared with SAI media.
Raised in Rumbek, South Sudan, Akot often had to sneak out to play basketball, as her parents prioritized her academic success over sports, wanting her to avoid following the path of her elder sister, Akon Paul Macuei, an international basketball player.
Despite being the youngest of six siblings, Akot was resolute in pursuing her passion while balancing her studies. “My parents urged me to focus on academics. With my sister already representing our country, they believed one player was sufficient. Eventually, they supported my dreams, and that’s how I made it here,” she recounted.
However, the passing of her father in 2020 due to COVID-19 derailed her plans again. It was her elder sister who encouraged her to seek scholarship opportunities abroad to fulfill her aspirations.
The KIUG 2025 marks Akot's first significant tournament in India since her arrival in Chennai last July, and she is impressed by the arrangements and level of competition. “The organization is remarkable—the courts, coaching, and overall venue are exceptional. The support for athletes is unparalleled, and I was taken aback by the scale of each game,” she expressed.
Akot hopes that her experiences in India will serve as a springboard for her to join the South Sudan National team, confident that her three-year journey in Chennai will enhance both her skills as a player and her personal growth.
