What Improvements Does Amorim See After Goalless Draw with Leeds?

Synopsis

In a pressing need for enhancement, Manchester United's coach, Ruben Amorim, reflects on the team's performance during their pre-season opener against Leeds United. With a goalless draw, Amorim calls for better pace in midfield as the team gears up for the new season. Will they rise from last season's lows?

Key Takeaways

  • Need for improved pace in midfield
  • Focus on team cohesion during pre-season
  • Upcoming match against West Ham United
  • Recognition of past difficulties and need for evolution
  • Positive team environment acknowledged by Amorim

Solna (Sweden), July 20 (NationPress) Manchester United's head coach Ruben Amorim has stressed the necessity for enhanced speed and improvements in the midfield as the team launched their pre-season with a goalless draw against Leeds United.

After a disheartening 2024-25 Premier League season, where United finished a historic low of 15th in the table and missed out on Champions League qualification following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final, Amorim recognized that there is significant work ahead.

He pointed out the urgent need for increased dynamism in the midfield, making it clear that the squad must evolve to recover from last year's disappointments.

Despite having new signing Matheus Cunha in the starting 11, Manchester United failed to shine in their draw against the newly promoted Leeds in Stockholm on Saturday.

"We faced challenges when we attempted to press high; they managed to kick the ball, win the second ball, and posed a threat at that moment," Amorim told MUTV.

"There is a lack of pace, particularly in the midfield, and you can sense it, which makes it difficult to advance the ball. However, we created opportunities. There’s much work to be done, but it was an initial test against a Premier League team, with two different squads, so it was a valuable assessment..."

"As a collective, we have plenty to enhance, including game speed and attention to details, so yes, we will improve."

Pre-season also offers a chance to unite the squad for an extended duration before the league campaign formally begins, and Ruben acknowledged the positive atmosphere within his group of players.

"I sensed that the environment is very good; of course, we will face challenges at times, but what I’ve felt from the start is that we will face these challenges together, and that's the foundation of everything. We must also bring in the quality because this club is not just about hard work; it’s about quality, and winning matches is essential," he added.

Next, United will face West Ham United at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 27.
