London, Jan 16 (NationPress) Arsenal reduced Liverpool's advantage at the summit of the Premier League to four points following a 2-1 victory at home against Tottenham Hotspur in the north-London derby.

Mikel Arteta's squad faced considerable pressure prior to the match due to a series of home losses, and the situation worsened when Son Heung-min gave Tottenham the lead in the 25th minute with a volley that was deflected into the net after a corner.

A crucial header from Gabriel Magalhaes led to a Dominic Solanke own goal during a corner in the 40th minute that brought Arsenal back on level terms.

Leandro Trossard netted what became the decisive goal in the 44th minute, finding himself with plenty of space on the left flank before firing a bouncing shot past Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, according to reports from Xinhua.

Despite Kai Havertz, Declan Rice, and Martin Odegaard missing opportunities to extend the lead in the second half, Arsenal managed to hold on for a tense finish and secure the win.

“We played with a genuine intent to hurt them. We created an incredible atmosphere. We recognize the significance of this match. It's a gift that brings joy to our supporters. The mentality we displayed, refusing to feel sorry for ourselves, was outstanding,” said Arteta.

“Having played 120 minutes three days ago, we had various significant chances. Ultimately, we had to endure more than we desired,” he added.

“When opportunities arise (to narrow the gap), it’s crucial to seize them. We are maintaining a solid performance in the Premier League. Tomorrow will be about recovery as we prepare for Aston Villa on Saturday. We will keep pushing,” he continued.

With this victory, Arsenal regained second place from Nottingham Forest, while Spurs find themselves in 13th place on the table.

In other matches, Alexander Isak scored for the eighth consecutive league match as Newcastle United continued their winning streak, achieving a 3-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at home.

The Swede's initial goal of the game, which came in the 34th minute, took a significant deflection from outside the penalty area, while he scored again in the 57th minute after navigating around Wolves' offside trap.

Anthony Gordon completed the scoring in the 74th minute, converting Isak's assist for an easy tap-in.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace made a critical move towards survival by defeating Leicester City 2-0, who are now on a six-game losing streak in the league.

Jean-Philippe Mateta opened the scoring in the 52nd minute, and Marc Guehi extended the lead in the 78th minute with a left-footed shot following a well-executed free kick.

Ollie Watkins spoiled David Moyes' return to Goodison Park as Aston Villa triumphed with a 1-0 win, although Everton will regret Dominic Calvert-Lewin's missed opportunity from six yards in injury time.

On the other hand, Liverpool played to a 1-1 draw away against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.
