Gurugram, March 17 (NationPress) In a remarkable display of skill, 21-year-old rookie Aryav Shah from Kolkata carded a stunning four-under par 68 to take the lead after the first round of the INR 25 lakh DP World PGTI NexGen 2026 tournament held at the Golden Greens Golf & Country Club in Gurugram on Tuesday.
Following closely behind are Ayaan Gupta, Lakshya Nagar, and Ruhanraj Vinayagam from Malaysia, all tied for third place with impressive scores of three-under par 69. Like Aryav, both Ayaan and Ruhanraj are also participating in their inaugural season on the DP World PGTI.
Aryav Shah started slowly on the front nine, recording two birdies and two bogeys. However, he rebounded strongly on the back nine, capturing four birdies to secure his lead.
This 54-hole event showcases a competitive field of 90 players, with the top 35 competitors and ties expected to make the cut after the second round on Wednesday.
The NexGen Tour, established by the PGTI last year, aims to create equitable opportunities for all professional golfers in India while enhancing the sport's overall competition level. Additionally, it seeks to promote professional golf in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities across India, broadening the sport's reach.
Participants from the 2026 PGTI Qualifying School are eligible to compete in the NexGen Tour this year, and the top player on the NexGen Order of Merit will earn an exemption for the main tour (DP World PGTI) in the 2027 season.
The NexGen 2026 season kicked off with its first event at the Aravalli Golf Club in Faridabad, where Abhishek Kumar set a remarkable tournament low score of eight-under par 64 in a bogey-free final round, clinching a stunning comeback victory.
The second event, the NexGen Phillaur Open 2026, took place from March 3–5 at the Ranjitgarh Golf Club in Phillaur, where Rajesh Kumar Gautam from Lucknow emerged victorious in a thrilling playoff against Pankaj Maandiya and Aditya Raj Singh Chahal, all finishing the regulation 54 holes with a score of six-under par 207.
The subsequent NexGen event unfolded at the Lucknow Golf Club from March 10–12, with the final NexGen event of the 2026 season scheduled at the Patna Golf Club from March 24–26.
This season has seen an increase in the prize purse for each NexGen event, rising from INR 20 lakh to INR 25 lakh.
