Dhaka, Jan 24 (NationPress) Bangladesh fast bowler Shoriful Islam stated on Friday that the players can solely concentrate on their performance, as they hold no sway over the decisions regarding Bangladesh's involvement in the forthcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. This comes amidst ongoing speculation regarding the nation's potential exit from the international tournament.
“Our duty is to play well. The decision of our participation in the World Cup is beyond our control,” Shoriful remarked, as reported by Dailystar.
His statements followed the Bangladesh Cricket Board's (BCB) firm stance on not sending players to India due to security issues, resulting from worsening relations between the two countries. Previously, the BCB requested that their matches be relocated to Sri Lanka. Nevertheless, the ICC confirmed on Wednesday that the T20 World Cup will proceed as planned, with Bangladesh's matches scheduled to take place in India.
In a press conference after being honored with the Player of the Season award in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), Shoriful emphasized that ongoing rumors regarding the World Cup should not divert players from their primary focus.
“As athletes, our priority is to consider how we can enhance our performance. Everyone aims to give their utmost from their respective positions, and that’s what I strive to do,” he stated.
Shoriful acknowledged that the ambiguity surrounding a significant global tournament can be daunting, yet he insisted that the ultimate decision lies outside the players' influence.
“Whether we participate in the World Cup or not is not for us to decide. The custodians of our cricket have reached a conclusion, and we honor that. Engaging in excessive discussion about something we cannot control serves no purpose,” he added.
When queried whether this matter had been deliberated amongst the team and if it had any psychological effects on the players, Shoriful reiterated the importance of prioritizing cricket over speculation.
“We are uncertain about what the future holds. Therefore, instead of dwelling on that, it's more beneficial to concentrate on our performance,” he affirmed.
Shoriful displayed outstanding form in the recently concluded BPL season, where the left-arm pacer captured 26 wickets, aiding his team, Chattogram Royals, in securing the runner-up position in the tournament.
