Guwahati, April 25 (NationPress) Bihar triumphed over the defending champions Odisha with a score of 21-12, securing the title of champions at the 12th Senior National Rugby 7s Championship (Women). This achievement marks Bihar’s second national championship title, having previously won in 2022 on their home ground.
The bronze medal match was equally intense, with Maharashtra overcoming Delhi 14-5 to maintain their third-place standing. Sunita Hansdah from Odisha was the standout performer of the tournament, scoring 13 tries, while Anshu Kumari and Arti Kumari from Bihar closely followed with 12 tries each.
In a statement regarding the conclusion of the women's competition, Indian Rugby Football Union (IRFU) President Rahul Bose remarked, “The 12th Senior Nationals showcased intense competition among teams, reflecting the advancements of women’s rugby across the nation in recent years.
“Every team from 24 states that took part deserves recognition for their dedication on the field. Congratulations to all medalists, especially Bihar for securing their second national title. The strides Bihar has made in women’s rugby serve as a model for other states to aspire to,” he added.
Bose also expressed gratitude to the Government of Assam for their substantial support in organizing the event.
Commenting on the performance of the Assam team and the event's hosting, Ramendra Narayan Kalita, President of the Rugby Association of Assam, stated, “It was a privilege for our state to host this thrilling rugby event over the past two days. It was uplifting to witness the efforts of the Assam women’s team, which improved their ranking by five spots from the previous competition, finishing in 13th place. Hosting this event has provided us with valuable experience, and we will strive to reach new heights in future competitions.”
With the women’s contest concluded, the focus will shift to the men’s category, where teams from 26 states will compete on April 27 and 28 for the championship title.
