London, July 14 (NationPress) Brentford has announced the acquisition of Jordan Henderson, the former captain of Liverpool who has celebrated victories in both the Premier League and Champions League, on a two-year deal.
Henderson, an England international boasting 84 caps, joins the Bees on a free transfer after leaving Ajax this summer.
Reports indicate that Brentford concluded the agreement last week; however, Henderson requested a delay in the announcement following the passing of his former teammate Diogo Jota. He joins the Bees to fill the gap left by Christian Norgaard, who has moved to Arsenal.
The midfielder returns to the Premier League after brief periods in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq and in the Netherlands with Ajax.
Before his international adventures, Henderson dedicated 12 years to Liverpool, where he secured the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, Community Shield, Super Cup, and Club World Cup.
Brentford's head coach, Keith Andrews, stated, “Upon learning of Jordan’s availability, the choice was straightforward. We conducted thorough research on his recent performances and found he remains in outstanding shape and highly motivated to excel in the sport, despite his past achievements.”
He added, “Considering the departure of seasoned players like Christian Norgaard, Mark Flekken, and Ben Mee, it was vital to fill that void.”
Henderson began his journey with his childhood club, Sunderland, making his Premier League debut at age 18. After a loan to Coventry City in the Championship during the 2008/09 season, he made an additional 70 top-flight appearances for Sunderland.
A transition to Liverpool followed, where he made 492 appearances and netted 33 goals, subsequently succeeding Steven Gerrard as the Reds' captain in 2015.
As captain, he lifted six trophies, including the Champions League after defeating Tottenham Hotspur.
Henderson was honored as the FWA Footballer of the Year at the conclusion of the 2019/20 season and earned a spot in the PFA Team of the Year.
On the international front, Henderson has represented England 84 times since his debut in 2010 and was named England Senior Men's Player of the Year in 2019.
The 35-year-old has participated in three World Cups, starting in the semi-final loss to Croatia in 2018 and scoring during the 3-0 victory against Senegal in the 2022 round of 16.
He has also competed in three European Championships, with the latest being in 2021, where England lost the final to Italy at Wembley Stadium.
Henderson received the honor of being appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2021 Birthday Honours for his contributions to football and charitable efforts.
