Manchester, May 7 (NationPress) Head coach Ruben Amorim opines that if Manchester United secures the Europa League title this season, they would earn the dubious distinction of being the worst team in Premier League history to achieve a European victory.
Currently languishing in 15th place in the Premier League, United triumphed over Athletic Bilbao with a 3-0 scoreline in the first leg of the Europa League semi-final. They are set to welcome Ernesto Valverde's squad for the return match at Old Trafford this coming Friday (IST).
“Analyzing the Premier League, I genuinely believe we are the worst (Manchester United) team in terms of performance since my arrival. That’s how I view it. By the end of this season, we could potentially be the worst team in Premier League history to win a European title. This reality won’t change anything. We recognize that this season has been a significant letdown for everyone. Nothing can alter that,” Amorim stated during the pre-match press briefing.
With only 39 points and three matches still left, United is on track to record their lowest points total in a season, eclipsing the previous low of 58 points from the 2021/22 campaign.
This situation virtually ensures that they will finish in the bottom half of the Premier League table for the first time, with their previous lowest finish being eighth last season.
Amorim also discussed team captain Bruno Fernandes, who shares the title of leading scorer in the Europa League with eight goals. Recently, there were rumors of interest from Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal, to which Amorim responded, indicating that the club is committed to keeping Bruno.
“It's easy to comprehend (his significance) not just due to his statistics but also the manner in which he plays and the impact he has made over the past five years. He is a premier talent, and we require top players. As our captain, he holds great importance,” Amorim emphasized.
“It’s natural for many clubs to pursue a player of Bruno’s caliber or even Alejandro Garnacho, but our objective is to retain our best talents. Bruno is undoubtedly among the elite players worldwide. Our stance remains unchanged; we are determined to keep Bruno with us.”
