Chennai, Feb 18 (NationPress) – Chennaiyin FC aims to launch their season with a strong performance when they face off against Mumbai City FC, in what promises to be an exciting matchup of two former champions in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2025-26 at the Mumbai Football Arena this Thursday.

This match signifies the beginning of a challenging series of four away games for the Marina Machans, who are eager to establish a positive momentum despite a brief and demanding preparation period for the season. During a pre-match press briefing on Wednesday, head coach Clifford Miranda addressed the tight schedule and expressed his confidence in the team's readiness.

“It's tough, and the break is hard to make up for. We've adapted both tactically and in our physical training. It has not been easy, but we are prepared,” Miranda stated.

He also shared insights about the newly formed five-member leadership group for the season, which includes Pritam Kotal, Mandar Rao Dessai, Elsinho, Alberto Noguera, and Mohammed Ali Bemammer—a mix of local expertise and international experience.

“I have 29 players available, and I want each one to step up as a leader. The players elected the leaders; it was a collective decision. The selected five are: Alberto Noguera and Pritam Kotal, along with Elsinho, Mohammed Ali Bemammer, and Mandar Rao Dessai,” Miranda elaborated.

During the press conference, Kotal emphasized the adjustments being made under the new coaching style, while reiterating the team’s focus on the immediate challenge.

“There are numerous talented coaches, each with unique methods. Clifford has a specific vision for our play. Adapting takes time, but I assure you, we'll be showcasing a different brand of football that fans will appreciate,” said the Indian defender. “We’ve trained well, and our priority is to start strong. The focus remains on the first 90 minutes against Mumbai, aiming for all three points.”

New signing Noguera, who joined Chennaiyin prior to the season, also shared his thoughts. The Spanish playmaker, with substantial experience in Indian football, characterized his decision to join the Marina Machans as straightforward.

“When Miranda reached out, I immediately agreed. Knowing his approach made the decision easy. We’re aiming for a successful season, and we’re ready to go,” Noguera commented.

This match will see Miranda facing his former team, but he downplayed any emotional aspects, choosing to concentrate on the task ahead.

“Whether it's Chennai against Goa, Mohun Bagan, or Odisha, it’s all the same. At some point, you face your old team. The same applies to Alberto and Pritam. When you’ve played or coached here for a long duration, such encounters are inevitable,” Miranda stated.

He confirmed that he anticipates having the complete squad available for the clash against Mumbai City, with the only exception being Daniel Chima Chukwu, who is awaiting documentation clearance before joining the team.
