Key Takeaways
Nuh, March 22 (NationPress) MJ Daffue achieved a remarkable bogey-free final round, securing his second title in just two months during an exhilarating final day at the DP World PGTI Open, a prestigious US$300,000 event co-sanctioned by the DP World PGTI.
The South African golfer, who initiated Sunday with a four-stroke advantage, posted a score of 69 to conclude at 21 under par 267, finishing one stroke ahead of American Jhared Hack and India's Saptak Talwar.
This victory propelled Daffue to the pinnacle of the season-long Road to Mallorca Rankings.
“I’m truly delighted,” he remarked. “The first win alleviates some pressure, but this time, I had confidence in my ability to succeed.”
“I felt at ease and carried momentum from recent weeks. I’ve been patient and worked with a sports psychologist, adopting the mantra of ‘dogged determination and patience,’ which greatly assisted me today.”
On Sunday morning, Daffue returned to the Classic Golf & Country Club to complete six holes of his third round, eventually carding a 67 to reach 18 under par after round three.
A slow start in his final round left him even through eight holes, but he managed a birdie at the ninth, followed by an eagle on the par five fourteenth.
Saptak Talwar, who entered the final round in third place, two shots behind after round three, started his round slowly with seven pars and a bogey in the first eight holes.
The 27-year-old Talwar surged back with five birdies between the ninth and eighteenth holes, including a crucial ten-foot conversion on the 13th hole.
He earned US$27,000 (INR 24,30,000) for his performance, maintaining his lead in the DP World PGTI Order of Merit as his season earnings climbed to INR 70,30,200.
Saptak stated, “I began a bit cautiously in the first eight holes today. However, I took pride in my determination during the last ten holes.”
“After last week’s victory, I felt exhausted. Post-win, it’s essential to recalibrate expectations and start anew, which I managed well by positioning myself favorably after the first two rounds this week.”
“The birdie on the 13th was pivotal for my day, setting me up for a strong finish. Notably, I kept my bogeys to a minimum for the second consecutive week with just two bogeys this week. My iron play has been sharp, and my putting has also improved.”
“The results from the last two events bolster my self-confidence as I head into the Indian Open next week.”
Jhared Hack, the winner of the DP World PGTI’s season opener, recorded a bogey-free 65 on the final day, finishing tied for second with Saptak at a total of 20 under 268.
Jhared currently ranks second on the DP World PGTI’s merit list, trailing Talwar with season earnings of INR 64,96,800.
Other notable Indian finishers in the top-10 included Yuvraj Sandhu (71), tied for sixth at 16 under 272, and Ravi Kumar (69), tied for ninth at 15 under 273.
Rashid Khan (74) and Pritish Singh Karayat (71) concluded tied for 17th at 13 under 275.
