IPL 2026: DC’s Venugopal Rao Reflects on Key Wickets in Loss to CSK
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, April 12 (NationPress) Venugopal Rao, the Director of Cricket for Delhi Capitals, acknowledged that a significant middle-order collapse, compounded by remarkable bowling from Chennai Super Kings, was instrumental in their 23-run loss during the IPL 2026 match held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
In pursuit of a target of 213 runs, DC lost their momentum after a sudden loss of wickets, ultimately being bowled out for 189. “After observing our batting in the second innings, there was a sense that CSK had put up a total that was hard to chase. Two overs, with 24 runs in the middle phase, really hurt us. Clearly, looking back now, CSK's four pace bowlers executed their plans excellently,” Rao explained in the post-match conference.
“I believe that losing four wickets in just four overs was the pivotal moment of the match. In this format, consecutive wickets can severely damage a team's chances. It’s all about momentum. Had we managed to restrict them to 15-20 fewer runs, our chances of successfully chasing down a total under 200 would have been significantly improved,” Rao noted.
DC's fielding also left much to be desired, featuring a missed run-out and a dropped catch of Sanju Samson at 52 runs, who went on to score an unbeaten 115.
“Fielding is definitely an area where we must enhance our performance. If we had fielded better, we could have potentially saved 15-20 runs, which would have made a considerable difference. In a long tournament, it’s common to have one or two off games. If you recall, the first three matches, we fielded exceptionally well with some excellent catches. However, during one crucial over after the strategic timeout, we missed a run-out and a catch,” Rao added.
On the subject of team personnel, Rao remained non-committal regarding Mitchell Starc's return and the prospective inclusion of Nikhil Chaudhary, stating, “We will provide clarity on Starc’s availability within a week.”
Despite the defeat, Rao praised Samson’s outstanding century for CSK, declaring, “He’s an exceptional player, without a doubt. Coming to a new franchise, scoring big runs is vital. I believe this century will bolster his confidence for the upcoming matches.”
