Indore, Jan 18 (NationPress) Batting all-rounder Glenn Phillips emphasized the importance of forming a partnership with Daryl Mitchell to stabilize New Zealand's innings in the crucial ODI against India, leading to a formidable score of 337/8 at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on Sunday.
After being asked to bat first on a challenging, two-paced pitch, New Zealand found themselves in a tough spot at 58/3. However, a remarkable 219-run partnership between Mitchell (137) and Phillips (106) shifted the momentum as they dominated the innings over 186 balls.
“The ground is small, and the pitch played a bit differently than anticipated. The key was to establish a partnership. We aimed to set a solid foundation for ourselves,” Phillips remarked during a mid-innings discussion with broadcasters.
Despite a slow start, where it took him 37 balls to hit his first boundary, Phillips eventually found his rhythm to achieve his second ODI century. He acknowledged Mitchell’s contribution in maintaining the scoring pace during his struggle.
“There was a moment around the 30th over where I felt a bit anxious, but having Mitchell at the crease instilled confidence in me. He was hitting the ball well, which alleviated the pressure. In an ODI, it's crucial to pace yourself, take it deeper, and then unleash your shots,” he continued.
Phillips concluded with hopes that the New Zealand spinners would maximize the turn while defending their impressive total, stating, “We initially aimed for 280 during the 25th over, but given their excellent bowling in the middle overs, we're pleased with 337. There was some turn evident when (Ravindra) Jadeja bowled. We hope to capitalize on that in the second innings.”
