New Delhi, March 23 (NationPress) The golfing scene in India is set for an exciting change, as the Indian Golf Union (IGU) is set to host the inaugural Golf Sixes Junior Tournament on Monday at the DLF Golf & Country Club in Gurgaon.
In collaboration with the global golfing authority, The R&A, the Golf Sixes format aims to make the sport more engaging, accessible, and lively for young players through its six-hole, team-based layout. This initiative seeks to elevate golf's appeal among India's youth, similar to the way shorter formats of cricket like T20 and T10 have captured the public's imagination.
IGU president Brijinder Singh shared his enthusiasm, expressing confidence that this innovative golf format will ignite a surge of interest among younger audiences.
“We anticipate a success akin to what T20 achieved for cricket by streamlining the game into a more dynamic, viewer-friendly format. This new golf version aims to deliver an exhilarating and engaging experience, allowing the younger generation to savor the excitement of the sport in a condensed timeframe. Six-Hole Golf has the potential to attract younger players and spectators, significantly enhancing the sport's popularity,” Singh stated.
The partnership between the IGU and The R&A highlights a mutual dedication to fostering long-term growth, particularly by targeting players aged 12 and under. This tournament plays a crucial role in nurturing the sport at the grassroots level.
The debut tournament will see participants from six states and union territories in North India: Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Chandigarh. Each team will consist of two players, representing a rich diversity of young golfing talent and illustrating the growing enthusiasm for junior golf in the country.
“The six-hole format is proving to be an effective method to make golf more accessible and attractive to a younger audience, who often have shorter attention spans.
