New Delhi, Sep 11 (NationPress) Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif asserts that India's willingness to participate in the Asia Cup against Pakistan has diminished the anticipation surrounding this major clash, set to unfold in Dubai on Sunday.
According to the notification from the Union Sports Ministry, India is permitted to engage with Pakistan in international and multilateral events, but is restricted from bilateral sports events on each other's soil.
India's choice to compete against Pakistan in the Asia Cup, which features eight teams, is in line with the government's policies.
"I am astonished to see how easily India consented to play Pakistan this time, leading to a lack of excitement around the match," Latif expressed to IANS. "Typically, matches gain attention when there are restrictions or obstacles. Tickets are still being sold in Dubai, which is notable for this occasion."
The 56-year-old also noted that escalating ticket prices have played a role in the subdued anticipation for the significant match in Dubai.
"In any venue, whether it’s Centurion, Sydney, or Chennai, it's always a full house. Fans will definitely show up, but the ticket costs are quite high. However, I believe the excitement will build up as we approach the match, and it promises to be a thrilling contest," Latif added.
The Suryakumar Yadav-led India kicked off their campaign with a commanding nine-wicket victory over the UAE on Wednesday, while Pakistan is set to begin their journey against Oman on Friday before facing India.
Earlier, the renowned 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev advised the public not to overemphasize the situation, stating that "the government will handle its responsibilities, and the players need to focus on theirs."
In a statement to reporters on Thursday, Kapil Dev remarked, "Just go out there and win. Those whose responsibility is to play should concentrate solely on the game—there's no need to complicate matters. The government will do its part, and the players should handle theirs."
India enters as the reigning champions of the tournament after clinching the ODI version of the continental competition in 2023.
