New Delhi, Aug 20 (NationPress) The India women’s cricket team is set to embark on a week-long preparatory camp in Visakhapatnam as they gear up for the upcoming ODI World Cup. According to sources from IANS, players are expected to arrive in Visakhapatnam on August 24, with the training camp commencing the following day.
The week-long camp will include the entire 15-member World Cup squad along with reserve players, although the precise daily agenda is still being finalized. Sources indicated that team members currently participating in the ongoing ‘A’ tour in Australia may join the camp directly in Visakhapatnam after their four-day match.
Recently, the team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, completed a ten-day preparatory camp at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru to prepare for the Women’s ODI World Cup, which kicks off on September 30.
The focus of the CoE camp was on strength and conditioning, match simulations, and skill-specific drills. Opting for Visakhapatnam as the location for the upcoming camp is advantageous, especially since the Indian team is scheduled to face South Africa and the defending champions Australia in league stage matches on October 9 and 12.
On Wednesday, India officially announced its 15-member squad and five reserve players during a press conference led by captain Harmanpreet and chief selector Neetu David at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. Notably, fast bowler Renuka Singh Thakur and all-rounder Amanjot Kaur are included in the squad after recovering from injuries.
Amanjot has been given a rest for the three-match ODI series against Australia in preparation for the World Cup, due to flare-ups from a back issue, while Renuka returns after healing from a stress fracture. Shafali Verma was not selected but is set to participate with the India ‘A’ team in the World Cup warm-up matches.
The Indian team will commence its journey in the eight-team tournament against co-hosts Sri Lanka on September 30. Historically, India has yet to clinch the Women’s ODI World Cup title, finishing as runners-up in the 2005 and 2017 editions.
