New Delhi, Aug 20 (NationPress) The India women’s cricket team is set to hold a week-long preparatory camp in Visakhapatnam as they gear up for the ODI World Cup. Sources from IANS indicate that players are expected to arrive in Visakhapatnam on August 24, with the camp commencing the following day.
IANS has learned that this preparatory camp will include all 15 members of the World Cup squad along with reserve players, although the detailed schedule is still under discussion. According to sources, “Players who are currently in Australia for the ongoing ‘A’ tour may head directly to Visakhapatnam after completing their four-day game.”
Recently, the team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, completed a ten-day training camp at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, aimed at preparing for the Women’s ODI World Cup, which kicks off on September 30.
This CoE camp concentrated on strength and conditioning, match simulations, and skill-specific drills. The choice of Visakhapatnam as the venue for the upcoming camp is strategic, as the Indian side is scheduled to play two league stage matches against South Africa and the defending champions Australia on October 9 and 12, respectively.
On Wednesday, the 15-member squad along with five reserve players was officially announced in a press conference led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur and chief selector Neetu David at the BCCI HQ in Mumbai. Notably, fast bowler Renuka Singh Thakur and all-rounder Amanjot Kaur have been included in India's squad after successfully recovering from their injuries.
Amanjot has been rested for the three-match ODI series against Australia prior to the World Cup to manage a flare-up of a back issue, while Renuka returns after healing from a stress fracture. Shafali Verma did not make the selection, but she will be part of the India ‘A’ team for the World Cup warm-up matches.
India will kick off the eight-team tournament against co-hosts Sri Lanka on September 30. Although India has never clinched the Women’s ODI World Cup, they have been runners-up in the editions of 2005 and 2017.
