New Delhi, Aug 20 (NationPress) The Indian women’s cricket team is set to initiate a week-long preparatory camp in Visakhapatnam prior to the upcoming ODI World Cup. According to sources from IANS, the players are expected to arrive in Visakhapatnam on August 24, with activities commencing the following day.
As per IANS, the entire 15-member World Cup squad along with reserve players will participate in this week-long camp, although the detailed daily itinerary remains to be finalized. Sources noted, “Those team members currently in Australia for the ongoing ‘A’ tour are likely to join the camp directly in Visakhapatnam after completing their four-day match.”
Recently, the team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, completed a ten-day training session at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru as part of their preparation for the Women’s ODI World Cup, which kicks off on September 30.
The focus of the training camp at the CoE was on strength, conditioning, match simulations, and skill-specific drills. The selection of Visakhapatnam as the location for the upcoming camp is strategic, given that the team is scheduled to face South Africa and defending champions Australia in league stage matches on October 9 and October 12, respectively.
On Wednesday, India unveiled its 15-member squad and five reserve players during a press conference held by captain Harmanpreet and chief selector Neetu David at the BCCI HQ in Mumbai. In the roster, fast bowler Renuka Singh Thakur and all-rounder Amanjot Kaur have been included after recovering from their injuries.
Amanjot has been rested from the three-match ODI series against Australia prior to the World Cup to manage a back issue, while Renuka returns after healing from a stress fracture. Although Shafali Verma has not made the final cut, she is part of the India ‘A’ team for the World Cup warm-up matches.
India will kick off the eight-team tournament against co-hosts Sri Lanka on September 30. The Indian team has yet to claim a Women’s ODI World Cup victory, having been runners-up in the 2005 and 2017 editions.
