New Delhi, April 2 (NationPress) In an unexpected turn of events, India’s left-handed opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has made a transition from Mumbai to Goa for the 2025/26 domestic cricket season, as confirmed by Vipul Phadke, President of the Goa Cricket Association (GCA).
Currently, Jaiswal is representing Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), having scored 34 runs in three matches thus far. He has also secured a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). Previously, players like Siddhesh Lad and Arjun Tendulkar have played for Goa in domestic cricket.
“The process is still ongoing, but he has obtained an NOC from the Mumbai Cricket Association. I believe our secretary (Shamba Naik Dessai) was in contact with him to facilitate this. For personal reasons, Jaiswal has departed from Mumbai,” explained Phadke.
“I’m not privy to the specifics of his departure from Mumbai, and I don’t wish to speculate on it. However, he has acquired the NOC and shown interest in representing Goa,” he added.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for Goa to welcome him into our team. Our players will benefit from the exposure and learning opportunities that come with having a player of his caliber,” Phadke told IANS on Wednesday.
IANS also attempted to contact Jwala Singh, Jaiswal’s childhood coach, and Ajinkya Naik, the MCA President, but received no response. Since making his senior debut for Mumbai in 2019, Jaiswal has played 36 first-class matches, scoring 3712 runs at an impressive average of 60.85. During the 2021/22 Ranji Trophy, he achieved three consecutive centuries, guiding Mumbai to the final.
In addition, he has accumulated 1526 runs in 33 List A matches at an average of 52.62, including a double century. Jaiswal made his international debut in 2023, scoring 171 on his Test debut against the West Indies. Now, at 23, he has also participated in T20Is and an ODI for India, scoring 393 runs in the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia.
Interestingly, Phadke mentioned that Jaiswal was the one who initiated the transfer to Goa from Mumbai. “He reached out to BCCI Joint Secretary Rohan Gauns Dessai, who is also from Goa. He was previously the secretary here in Goa. This was a positive development, and the Goa secretary and I became part of this process. It’s an excellent opportunity to have Jaiswal on our team,” he added.
With Jaiswal joining Goa, a team that secured promotion to the Ranji Trophy Elite stage after winning the Plate Division title earlier this year, he is seen as a strong candidate to lead the side in domestic cricket, depending on his international commitments.
This opportunity would not have been available in the star-studded Mumbai team, led by Ajinkya Rahane and Shreyas Iyer in red-ball and white-ball formats, respectively. However, Phadke believes that the senior Goa men’s selection committee will ultimately make this decision in due course.
“The selection committee will make the final decision, as that is their responsibility. They will choose a captain who can effectively manage the entire team, and Jaiswal has the capability to do so. Therefore, the selection committee will approach this positively, as it is beyond my control, and I cannot provide further comments,” he concluded.
