Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 4 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Saba Karim lauded Shreyas Iyer after his stellar half-century for Punjab Kings (PBKS) against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 7th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday.
Iyer delivered a crucial innings, scoring 50 runs off 29 balls, demonstrating his skill in managing the game and accelerating when necessary. His performance was pivotal in helping Punjab Kings chase down a target of 210 runs in just 18.4 overs, marking their second victory over Chennai in a row.
Karim believes that despite his consistent performances, Iyer remains underrated.
"Today was a perfect example of why he stands out from the other batters we've observed this season. In the T20 format, he appears flawless and seems to have ample time. I would argue he is the best batter against spin bowling in white-ball cricket, covering both one-day and T20 formats," Karim remarked to ESPNCricinfo.
"Moreover, his enhancements against pace bowlers, particularly his improved square shots on the on side, have made him a more complete and challenging batter to restrict," he added.
Karim emphasized the advancements in Iyer's technique and strategy, which have enhanced his effectiveness against various bowling styles.
"He positions himself strongly before facing each delivery. Observe his trigger movement: he shifts back, redistributing his weight from one leg to the other," Karim explained. "This allows his front leg to open effortlessly, leading to powerful shots. This is a major area where he's put in significant effort," he noted.
"It also enables him to handle short deliveries effectively, allowing him to either step forward or shift his weight, striking the ball down the ground or over the square-leg or midwicket boundary," he added.
Over the last two years, Iyer's T20 statistics have seen a remarkable surge. In 43 matches since IPL 2024, he has maintained a strike rate of 169.51. During this timeframe, he scored 351 runs for KKR in 2024 and subsequently emerged as PBKS’ leading run-scorer with 604 runs in 2025.
Following their victory over CSK, the 2025 runners-up, Punjab Kings are set to compete against the three-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on April 6 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
