Galle, Feb 10 (NationPress) Australia coach Andrew McDonald expresses strong confidence in Cooper Connolly's future in Test cricket, despite a quiet debut performance, asserting that the young batting all-rounder has ample opportunity to secure his position within the team’s top six.

Connolly made his debut in just his fifth first-class match, with selectors anticipating difficult batting conditions during the second Test against Sri Lanka at Galle. However, the pitch turned out to be more favorable than expected, except for a challenging spell on day three when Sri Lanka unleashed a formidable new-ball attack, resulting in a dramatic collapse of 7-64.

"He’s just getting started. It’s premature to evaluate anything from that match," McDonald was cited by cricket.com.au. "He faced five overs—the shot he played, if given another chance, he might choose differently. He is definitely someone we envision for the future. When he reaches the stage to challenge for a top-six batting position, who knows? But that’s how we see him progressing."

McDonald admitted that Australia misjudged their strategy by selecting Connolly instead of third frontline spinner Todd Murphy.

"We believed we had enough bowling support and prioritized runs," McDonald clarified. "Did it unfold as we anticipated? Perhaps not. However, we certainly discussed potential struggles with runs in this match."

Connolly bowled only five overs of left-arm spin and scored just four runs during Australia’s batting collapse, misplaying a shot to backward point.

That was his lone chance at the crease, as Australia lost only one wicket in their successful chase to secure victory and complete a series whitewash.

Despite his modest debut, Connolly remains a key part of Australia’s future plans. Having already participated in white-ball cricket for the national team, his Test prospects are still uncertain, especially outside Asia, where his left-arm spin is not as appealing a selection option.

With Sam Konstas and Cameron Green also vying for a spot in the World Test Championship final in June, Connolly faces tough competition for a batting position.

Smith also expressed faith in Connolly's long-term potential, stating, "He has a bright future ahead, that’s for sure."
