New Delhi, May 15 (NationPress) Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis is poised to step in for Jos Buttler in the Gujarat Titans (GT) lineup for the upcoming IPL 2025 playoffs. This marks Mendis's inaugural appearance in the IPL.
According to a report from ESPNCricinfo on Thursday, Mendis will not participate in the remaining matches of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) due to security issues and will instead travel to India for the IPL playoffs. He has accumulated 143 runs at a strike rate of 168 over five matches in the 2025 PSL.
The report further indicates that Mendis is currently in the process of obtaining his India visa and is expected to join the GT squad on Saturday, just in time for their match against the Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday.
Buttler’s absence during the IPL playoffs is attributed to his selection in England's ODI squad for the home series against the West Indies, which kicks off on May 29 – the same day the IPL playoffs commence, culminating in the final on June 3.
Following England's group stage exit in the 2025 Champions Trophy, Buttler was replaced as captain by Harry Brook. The GT, champions of IPL 2022, currently lead the points table for IPL 2025 and appear set for playoff action.
Additionally, Will Jacks and Jacob Bethell, representing Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru respectively, may also miss the IPL playoffs due to national commitments, although their current availability status remains uncertain.
Moreover, Jofra Archer and Jamie Overton, who have also been selected for the England squads against the West Indies, will not be returning to India as their franchises – Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) – have already been eliminated from playoff contention.
