Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 15 (NationPress) Mithali Raj, the renowned former captain of the Indian women's cricket team, has expressed her enthusiasm regarding the advancements of the Nari Shakti Vandan initiative. She emphasized that it represents a crucial step towards inclusive growth following her meeting with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta in Tirupati.
"I appreciate your encouraging words, ma'am. It was delightful to engage with you in Tirupati. The developments surrounding Nari Shakti Vandan are remarkably inspiring and signify a meaningful stride towards enhanced representation and inclusive growth in our democracy," Mithali posted on her ‘X’ account.
Delhi CM Rekha praised Mithali's advocacy for the initiative, remarking that the dates April 16-18 would be pivotal for the nation. "I had a wonderful discussion with the legendary cricketer and former captain of the Indian Women’s Cricket Team, Mithali Raj ji, in Tirupati. Her endorsement of Nari Shakti Vandan reflects a broader national sentiment, where women transition from mere achievement to leadership roles.
“The 16th, 17th, and 18th of April will be a significant occasion, as the increased representation of women in Parliament adds considerable depth to India's democratic evolution," she shared on ‘X’.
This meeting precedes an important parliamentary session scheduled for Thursday, during which discussions on the proposed amendments to the women's reservation law, initially passed in September 2023, are expected to take place.
The Act mandates that one-third of seats in both the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies be reserved for women. Currently, Mithali serves as a consultant for Women's Cricket Operations at the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA), in addition to her commentary roles. Last year, during the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup, a stand named in her honor was inaugurated at the ACA-VDCA International Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam.
