London, Jan 18 (NationPress) Virgil van Dijk praised Darwin Nunez for his crucial impact after Liverpool triumphed over Brentford 2-0, highlighted by a last-minute brace from their forward.
Nunez entered the match in the second half at Gtech Community Stadium and became the key player by netting two goals in stoppage time, clinching an important win for the Premier League frontrunners.
“It required a lot of effort. Brentford away is a challenging venue. Their high pressing, followed by a low defensive block, combined with their counter-attack prowess makes it tough. We performed well and persevered. Ultimately, Darwin changed the game with his two goals,” said captain Virgil Van Dijk to BBC Sport.
The forward made his appearance in the 65th minute at Gtech Community Stadium, emerging as the hero with his late goals. The title-chasing Reds appeared to face a frustrating match until Nunez broke the deadlock just before the end of regulation, adding another in the third minute of stoppage time.
“Since joining, Darwin has brought immense energy. As a striker, goals define you, and this era makes it particularly challenging. He’s putting in the effort and developing his game. Today, he played a vital role in our victory, which was well-earned. It’s just a small piece of the overall picture. We must continue to push forward,” he noted.
This win was essential for Liverpool, allowing them to extend their lead over Arsenal to seven points, with the Gunners scheduled to play later that day. The Dutch defender remarked that the season promises to be turbulent.
“There’s no easy game. Every opponent is strong and aims to deliver their best performance against us, just as we strive to do the same. If anyone thinks this season will be smooth sailing, they are mistaken,” stated Van Dijk.
