Mumbai, April 27 (NationPress) Rishabh Pant, captain of the Lucknow Super Giants, stood by his choice to bowl first under the sweltering conditions during an afternoon match at the Wankhede Stadium, despite his team facing a challenging 54-run defeat in Match 45 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Sunday.
The Mumbai batsmen took full advantage of a pitch that was favorable for batting, accumulating a total of 215/7 with significant contributions from Ryan Rickelton (58) and Suryakumar Yadav (54). The LSG batters struggled against the oppressive heat, as Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult delivered impressive performances, taking 4-22 and 3-20 respectively, ultimately bowling out the visitors for 161 in their 20 overs, securing MI's fifth consecutive victory.
This victory marked Mumbai's milestone of 150 IPL wins, making them the first team to achieve this feat, and it was also their initial triumph over LSG in the league phase.
Pant insisted that the decision to bowl first did not dictate the outcome, as they were simply outperformed by a superior team.
"Bowling first was a strategic choice for us; we trust our batting lineup. We aimed to provide our bowlers with optimal conditions, but unfortunately, today wasn't our day. The opposing team played exceptionally well, and they deserve credit for their performance. We can regroup during the break," Pant stated following his team's fifth loss in ten matches, which has left them languishing in sixth place in the standings.
Amidst the team's woes, Pant has also struggled with his form, getting out on the second ball faced against Will Jacks after hitting a four off the first delivery. Although he typically bats in the middle order, Pant was promoted to No. 4 but was unable to make an impact.
He defended his decision to bat higher in the order, asserting that he is not overly concerned with his ongoing struggles at the crease. With just 110 runs in ten matches and a peak score of 63 against Chennai Super Kings this season, he remains focused on the bigger picture.
"I’m not dwelling too much on my performance. In a season like this, it's easy to question oneself, but I choose not to. It’s not always right to single out an individual for blame," he explained.
On a brighter note for LSG, young fast bowler Mayank Yadav made his return, having previously clocked the fastest delivery of IPL 2024 at 155.8 kmph. He delivered a commendable performance with figures of 2-40 over four overs, maintaining speeds in the 140-kmph range.
"It was promising to see him back in action. He’s finding his rhythm, and I hope he continues to improve," Pant concluded after the match.
