Colombo, April 6 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his belief that the 1996 World Cup-winning team of Sri Lanka, known for their bold and distinctive batting style, was the origin of T20 cricket.
During a meeting with members of the victorious squad, including Sanath Jayasuriya, Chaminda Vaas, Aravinda de Silva, Marvan Atapattu, Ravindra Pushpakumara, Upul Chandana, Kumar Dharmasena, and Romesh Kaluwitharana, PM Modi discussed the sport and the robust bond between India and Sri Lanka during his visit to the island.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you all. Your team is still fondly remembered in India, and the impact you had is unforgettable,” the Prime Minister humorously noted.
He emphasized how both India’s 1983 World Cup triumph and Sri Lanka’s 1996 victory were pivotal moments in the evolution of international cricket.
“The victories of India in 1983 and you in 1996 reshaped cricket as we know it. I firmly believe that T20 cricket emerged from the innovative way your team played during that tournament,” he remarked.
PM Modi reflected on India’s trip to Sri Lanka in 1996, despite a bomb incident, describing it as a profound symbol of sportsmanship and lasting friendship. He recounted how he visited Sri Lanka after the 2019 terror attacks, reaffirming India’s unwavering spirit.
“I recall when India chose to play amidst the chaos while other teams withdrew; the players appreciated our commitment. We stood by Sri Lanka during tough times and showcased that sportsmanship triumphs over adversity,” PM Modi stated.
The Sri Lankan cricketers urged PM Modi to assist in developing a premier cricket facility in the northern region of Sri Lanka, particularly in Jaffna.
The players expressed gratitude to PM Modi for India’s support during Sri Lanka’s economic challenges. The Prime Minister reiterated India’s dedication to the ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, citing India’s aid to Myanmar following a recent earthquake as another instance.
