Why Did Priyank Panchal Choose to Retire from Cricket?

New Delhi, May 26 (NationPress) Veteran opener from Gujarat, Priyank Panchal, has declared his immediate retirement from all cricket formats. Panchal, who led India A and Gujarat in various formats, played a pivotal role in his state team’s Ranji Trophy victory in the 2016/17 season.

During that championship run, he emerged as the tournament's leading scorer, amassing 1310 runs at an impressive average of 87.33. The accomplished right-handed batsman was also instrumental in Gujarat's success in the 2015/16 Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2012/13 and 2013/14.

“This is an emotional and enriching moment that fills me with deep gratitude, especially towards my fans. I have always cherished the messages I receive from you. Many have expressed a desire to see me don the India colors. It has been this unwavering encouragement that has propelled my journey thus far,” Panchal shared in a heartfelt note on his social media.

“However, this story is far from over. Anyone who knows me understands my love for books. No matter how thrilling a chapter might be, I believe the next one holds even more promise. I hope my journey reflects this sentiment,” he added.

At 35, Panchal has tallied 8856 runs in first-class cricket, including 29 centuries and 34 half-centuries, featuring a remarkable score of 314 not out. He also accumulated 3672 runs in 97 List A matches with eight centuries and 21 fifties. In the T20 format, he scored 1522 runs across 59 innings, including nine fifties.

Reflecting on his journey, he stated, “As a child, I idolized my father, who was a constant source of inspiration. He motivated me to chase my dreams and aspire to wear the India cap one day. His memory has driven me for nearly two decades until today.”

Panchal's last first-class appearance saw him score 148 runs in the Ranji Trophy semifinal against Kerala in the 2024/25 season, although the match resulted in a narrow first-innings lead for the visitors. His closest shot at playing for the Indian Test team came when he was included in the squad for the South Africa tour after Rohit Sharma faced an injury.

“I owe immense gratitude to my mother and sister, who have been unwavering pillars of support throughout my journey. They witnessed my dedication during the scorching summers of Ahmedabad, as I hustled between grounds for competitive games since my teenage years,” he reflected.

“They elevated me when I felt like drowning and kept my confidence intact. I could not have achieved this without their support,” he said.

“To my wife and her family, who have now become my own. They have offered me companionship, love, and unwavering support. They have celebrated my successes and stood by me during my lows. I appreciate all the love and hope to reciprocate it faithfully,” Panchal concluded.
