Usha, alongside members of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), expressed their sorrow over the passing of Suresh Kalmadi, a longstanding sports administrator and former president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), who died in Pune on Tuesday. Kalmadi, aged 81, leaves behind his wife, Meera Kalmadi, as well as his daughters and son.
He was a significant figure in the realm of Indian sports administration, having held the presidency of both the AFI and the Asian Athletics Association. Additionally, he was at the helm of the IOA for more than ten years.
The current IOA chairperson, P.T. Usha, extended her condolences on X, stating, “As the IOA President, I am deeply saddened by the loss of former IOA President Shri. Suresh Kalmadi ji. He served as AFI President for nearly two decades, implementing numerous developmental initiatives for the advancement of Athletics in India. My heartfelt condolences to his family! Om Shanti!”
“He will always be remembered for his dedication and inspirational leadership as a sports administrator. His relentless commitment to Indian athletics has created a lasting impact. He also worked to establish Railway travel discounts for athletes,” said Bahadur Singh Sagoo, the president of AFI.
Moreover, Lalit Bhanot, a former secretary of AFI, remarked, “His (Kalmadi's) legacy in Indian sports will be cherished for years to come. He revitalized the National Games, leading to the development of modern infrastructure nationwide. In the early 1990s, he initiated prize money track-and-field events and invited top foreign athletes, including Olympic legends like Carl Lewis and Mike Powell, which transformed the sports landscape in the country.”
Kalmadi was the president of the Indian athletics federation from 1987 to 2006 and served on the World Athletics Council. He also led the Asian athletics organization for nearly a decade, beginning in 2000.
During his presidency of the IOA from 1996 to 2012, Kalmadi was instrumental in organizing the Afro-Asian Games in Andhra Pradesh. His influence broadly reshaped Indian sports, particularly athletics, throughout his extensive tenure. Additionally, he chaired the organizing committee for the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi.
