Pujara Supports Bumrah as a Future Captain for India

New Delhi, Dec 2 (NationPress) Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara has thrown his support behind pace sensation Jasprit Bumrah as a potential long-term captain for India, particularly when Rohit Sharma eventually steps down. Pujara’s remarks come after Bumrah’s remarkable leadership during India’s recent victory against Australia, where he proved his capability to lead under tremendous pressure.
Pujara praised Bumrah’s leadership skills and his team-centric mindset. "He is a viable long-term captaincy option without any doubt," Pujara stated on ESPN Cricinfo. "The way he has demonstrated that in challenging circumstances, particularly during a tough home series and while playing his first Test match in Australia, has been impressive."
"I believe he possesses the ability to lead the team and is truly a team player. He consistently focuses on the team and other players, always considering what advice he can offer," he added.
Bumrah took the helm for India in the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma and guided the team to a decisive victory in the first Test against Australia, silencing critics and showcasing his prowess.
India’s tour of Australia commenced amid difficult conditions, with the team recovering from a disheartening 0-3 home series defeat to New Zealand. That loss not only affected morale but also significantly hindered India’s chances of qualifying for the ICC World Test Championship final for the third consecutive time.
Nevertheless, Bumrah stepped up, delivering a stunning opening spell that dismantled the Australian batting lineup on their home turf. His performance was crucial in establishing the momentum for a dominant Indian victory, highlighting both his skills as a bowler and his capability to motivate the team.
Pujara emphasized Bumrah’s qualities that make him an exceptional leader. "He has the potential to lead the team, and he embodies what it means to be a team player. He never speaks solely about himself; his focus is always on the team and his teammates," Pujara remarked.
One of Bumrah’s outstanding characteristics, according to Pujara, is his humility and adaptability. "There are moments when players don’t require advice, and he recognizes that. If there’s a seasoned player in the squad, he remains silent. That’s a hallmark of a good captain," he added.
Pujara also noted Bumrah’s approachable nature, stating, "He’s very down-to-earth, friendly with players in the dressing room, and always willing to assist. Even off the field, he has a humble personality and is a wonderful person to converse with."
Bumrah will be returning the captaincy to Rohit Sharma for the second Test, a pink-ball match in Adelaide commencing December 6.
