Kolkata, Aug 4 (NationPress) Former India wicketkeeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha has officially stepped into the role of head coach for the Bengal under-23 men’s squad, kicking off their first training session at the iconic Eden Gardens on Monday, lasting three hours.
“Embarking on a new journey... I am honored to take on the position of Head Coach for the Bengal U-23. Coaching transcends mere instruction; it involves instilling confidence, honing skills, and fostering a cohesive team spirit,” Saha shared via his Instagram account.
“Returning to Eden Gardens in this new capacity felt extraordinary. I am eager to collaborate with a talented group of young players who possess both ambition and skill. I look forward to guiding, learning, and evolving together—one match and one training session at a time. Let’s strive to make this season memorable,” he added.
Alongside Saha in the U23 coaching staff are Utpal Chatterjee and Debabrata Das, who participated in the training sessions, along with strength & conditioning coach Sabir Ali, video analyst Mukesh Sinha, physiotherapist Dipti Ranjan Parida, and masseur Mrinal Kanti Paul.
“I favor brief and focused meetings. Our team must concentrate on refining our skills and supporting one another. Individual ambitions should take a backseat; we need to trust ourselves and implement our training during matches,” he remarked.
“There is an abundance of talent among our players. Selecting the best squad from the potential candidates will be a challenge due to the sheer amount of talent available. These boys have the necessary skills for both batting and bowling, and they understand the tasks at hand. Our coaching staff's role is to provide proper guidance and maintain a positive environment to achieve the desired outcomes,” Saha emphasized during training.
Saha has played 40 Test matches for India between 2010 and 2021, in addition to participating in nine T20 internationals. His IPL career includes stints with Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Punjab Kings, and Gujarat Titans.
While he was a runner-up with PBKS in 2014, scoring a century in the final, he celebrated victory when GT clinched the IPL 2022 trophy. Earlier this year, Saha also took on the role of mentor for Siliguri Strikers in season 2 of the Bengal Pro T20 League.
