New Delhi, Feb 27 (NationPress) Two-time Olympic medallist shuttler PV Sindhu committed to minimizing oil in her daily meals to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'fight against obesity' initiative. She also invited legendary cricketers Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Tokyo Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra to participate in this movement.
Sindhu was nominated by double Olympic bronze medallist shooter Manu Bhaker and has now passed the challenge to ten individuals, including Sachin, Virat, Neeraj, and other esteemed athletes such as Anju Bobby George, Sania Mirza, Mary Kom, Gagan Narang, Viren Rasquinha, along with Telugu cinema stars Mahesh Babu and Chiranjeevi Konidela.
Taking to X, Sindhu expressed, "Thank you, the lovely @realmanubhaker and the ever-inspiring @anandmahindra ji, for nominating me! It appears that it's time to have a conversation with my samosas and pakoras—it’s not you, it’s me. Less oil, more effort for a healthier Bharat!
"I’m passing the baton to these remarkable champions to nominate the next group of individuals," she added.
Previously, Nau and Tokyo Olympic silver medallist weightlifter Mirabai Chanu joined the campaign against obesity and nominated ten others to help raise awareness for this important cause.
During the 119th episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’, PM Modi addressed the rising obesity rates and stated, "To evolve into a fit and healthy nation, we must confront the issue of obesity. A study indicates that one in every eight individuals is currently facing obesity issues.
"Obesity cases have doubled in recent years, and what's even more alarming is the fourfold increase of this problem among children. According to WHO data, approximately 250 crore people worldwide were classified as overweight in 2022. This means they exceeded their required weight.
"Together, we can tackle this challenge with small efforts. For example, one suggestion I made was to 'reduce the consumption of edible oil by ten percent'. Commit to using 10 percent less oil each month. Decide that when buying cooking oil, you will purchase 10 percent less. This will be a significant step towards combating obesity," he added.
