New Delhi, Feb 24 (NationPress) Tokyo Olympic silver medallist weightlifter Mirabai Chanu expressed her gratitude for being part of the 'fight against obesity' initiative initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
On Monday, PM Modi emphasized the critical need to address the increasing rates of obesity and nominated ten notable figures to advocate for reducing edible oil consumption. He encouraged these individuals to nominate another ten people to broaden the campaign's reach.
"As stated in yesterday's #MannKiBaat, I would like to nominate the following individuals to empower the fight against obesity and raise awareness about minimizing edible oil usage in our meals," PM Modi shared on X, tagging Anand Mahindra, Dinesh Lal Yadav ‘Nirahua’, Manu Bhaker, Mirabai Chanu, Mohanlal, Nandan Nilekani, Omar Abdullah, Madhavan, Shreya Ghoshal, and Sudha Murty.
"I also urge them to nominate 10 additional individuals to help our movement grow! Together, let’s strive for a fitter and healthier India. #FightObesity," the post continued.
"I feel incredibly honored to be nominated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to raise awareness in the battle against obesity. This significant health issue can be tackled by adopting the right lifestyle choices and committing to being active, healthy, and fit. We need India to progress in this direction to bolster our growth journey," Mirabai stated.
"Implementing minor adjustments in our daily routines can lead to substantial transformations for the nation and assist us in realizing our vision of a Fit India," she noted.
As part of this initiative, the celebrated weightlifter nominated world chess champion Gukesh Dommaraju, London Olympic bronze medallist shuttle player Saina Nehwal, London 2012 bronze medal-winning shooter Gagan Narang, former hockey captains Rani Rampal & Manpreet Singh, tennis legend Leander Paes, two-time Olympic medallist shuttle player PV Sindhu, paddler Manika Batra, Paris 2024 bronze medallist Sarabjot Singh, and two-time Paralympic champion shooter Avani Lekhara.
During the 119th episode of 'Mann Ki Baat', PM Modi addressed the rising obesity levels, stating, "To build a fit and healthy nation, we must confront the obesity challenge. Research indicates that one in every eight individuals is affected by obesity. The prevalence of obesity has doubled in recent years, and alarmingly, it has increased fourfold among children. According to WHO data, in 2022, approximately 250 crore individuals globally were overweight, meaning they had excess weight."
"We can collectively tackle this issue with simple efforts. For instance, one suggestion I made was to 'reduce edible oil consumption by ten percent.' Commit to using 10 percent less oil each month. You can decide to purchase 10 percent less oil for cooking. This will be a vital step in combating obesity," he added.
