Bollywood star and Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner Shah Rukh Khan on 2 July celebrated the inauguration of the Knight Riders Cricket Ground in Los Angeles as the fulfilment of a years-long vision, after the venue hosted its first Major League Cricket (MLC) fixture. The Knight Riders Group has become the first global cricket franchise to own and establish an international-standard cricket stadium.

Historic First Match at the Venue

The Los Angeles Knight Riders (LAKR) faced off against Washington Freedom in the inaugural match at the newly constructed ground, marking a landmark moment in cricket's expanding footprint across the United States. The venue is set to host MLC matches from 1 July to 5 July, underlining America's emergence as one of the sport's fastest-growing markets.

What Shah Rukh Khan Said

Reflecting on the occasion, Shah Rukh Khan described the stadium as the culmination of a long-held ambition. 'What started as a dream has become a reality today. Bringing cricket, the second most-watched sport in the world, to Los Angeles is a landmark moment for all of us. Khan also expressed hope that the ground would anchor cricket in the city for generations. 'We hope this becomes a home for cricket in Los Angeles and inspires generations of fans and players alike. Knight Riders Group's Statement of Intent

Knight Riders Sports CEO Venky Mysore framed the stadium as more than a facility. Becoming the first global cricket brand to establish an international cricket stadium is a proud milestone for the Knight Riders Group and reflects our belief that the growth of the game must be supported by world-class infrastructure,' Mysore said.

Stadium Specifications and Infrastructure

Built to ICC standards, the Knight Riders Cricket Ground features eight wickets on the main square, ICC-standard playing dimensions, and six 120-foot floodlight towers. Construction required the movement of over 32,000 metric tonnes of earth. The venue was developed through a long-term partnership between the Knight Riders Group and Fairplex, the Los Angeles County-based event complex.

The United States has rapidly grown as a cricket market, bolstered by a large South Asian diaspora and the success of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, co-hosted by the US. The Knight Riders' investment in permanent infrastructure signals a shift from pop-up venues to purpose-built facilities, a critical step if the sport is to build a durable domestic following.
