Syed Modi International: PV Sindhu Secures First Title Since July 2022; Treesa-Gayatri Triumph in Women's Doubles

Lucknow, Dec 1 (NationPress) Double Olympic medallist shuttler PV Sindhu has successfully secured her first title in more than two years by overcoming China's Wu Luo Yu in the finals of the Syed Modi International women's singles competition on Sunday.

Sindhu, who faced challenges since the commencement of 2024, dominated her rival with a score of 21-14, 21-16 in a match lasting 47 minutes, marking her third tournament victory. She previously won this event in 2017 and 2022.

The former world champion last celebrated a title victory at the Singapore Open in July 2022. Throughout the ongoing 2024 season, she reached the finals of the Malaysia Masters Super 500 before finally breaking her title drought in Lucknow.

In the women's doubles category, the Indian pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand achieved a significant milestone by winning their first Super 300 title. They recorded a decisive victory with a score of 21-18, 21-11 against China's Bao Li Jing and Li Qian, becoming the first Indian women's doubles team to conquer this tournament. The Commonwealth Games bronze medallists, who were runners-up in the 2022 edition, improved their performance this year.

In men's doubles, the duo of Pruthvi Krishnamurthy Roy and Sai Pratheek K exhibited commendable resilience in the final but narrowly fell to China's Huang Di and Liu Yang, with a final score of 14-21, 21-19, 17-21 after a challenging 71-minute match.

Meanwhile, in the mixed doubles event, the fifth-seeded pair of Tanisha Castro and Dhruv Kapila started off strong by winning the first game, but eventually lost 21-18, 14-21, 8-21 to the sixth-seeded duo from Thailand, Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran.
