New Delhi, Jan 26 (NationPress) Top-order batter Tilak Varma believes that the decision made by India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav to assign him the number three batting position has marked a significant turning point in his career within the shortest format of the game.

Since his debut in August 2023, Tilak has emerged as one of India’s standout young talents, particularly excelling in recent months. His promotion to the number three spot during the South Africa tour proved to be an immediate success, highlighted by his consecutive centuries.

His match-winning performance of 72 not out in a challenging chase of 166 against England in Chennai further demonstrated why Tilak is well-suited for the number three role in T20I cricket for India. His statistics as a number three batter are impressive, boasting 419 runs across 11 innings, with an average of 69.83 and a strike rate of 171.02.

"When Surya bhai gave me that No. 3 position in South Africa, it became a pivotal moment for me. I want to extend my gratitude to Surya bhai for that. Regarding this series, I’m ready to adapt wherever needed, especially with a left-right combination in play. Flexibility is key, and I’m adjusting well to it. Tilak and Suryakumar have shared the field in the Mumbai Indians’ setup during the Indian Premier League (IPL) since Tilak joined the team in 2022. The left-handed batter expressed that having Suryakumar as the Indian team captain is a great advantage from a young player's perspective.

"I can only say one thing, not just for myself. We both play together in the IPL, but he builds strong connections with every player, whether on the field or off it. He dedicates ample time to all of us.

"It’s wonderful to have someone like Suryakumar Yadav, the captain of India, with us. Even when a new player joins the team, he makes them feel at ease. His ability to bond with everyone is remarkable. All of this positively impacts our performance on the field. His friendliness enhances our understanding and coordination, making it easier to navigate our roles effectively. This is immensely beneficial not just for me but for the entire team," he elaborated.

With a commanding 2-0 lead in the five-match series, India is set to face England in the third T20I at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot on January 28.
