Taneesha Kotecha delivered a composed, match-winning performance to defeat Diya Chitale 2-1 (11-7, 11-2, 9-11) in the decisive women's singles, handing HVR Kolkata Thunder Blades an 8-7 win over PBG Pune Jaguars in Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 7 at Panaji, Goa on Friday, 11 July. In the day's opening tie, Dabang Delhi TTC staged a determined comeback to defeat UP Prometheans 9-6, opening their Season 7 campaign with a victory at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium.

Kotecha's Nerve Decides Kolkata vs Pune Thriller

The tie between Kolkata and Pune was locked at 6-6 heading into the final rubber, making the women's singles a straight shootout. The 19-year-old Kotecha rose to the occasion, overpowering world-ranked No. 77 Chitale in the opening two games before Chitale pulled one back in the third. Kotecha's composure under pressure proved the difference.

Pune had made a bright start when Snehit SFR defeated Ankur Bhattacharjee 2-1 (11-9, 11-4, 5-11) in the opening men's singles. Kolkata levelled immediately through Singapore's Zeng Jian, who beat Prithika Pavade 2-1 (11-6, 11-7, 8-11) in the women's singles. The mixed doubles then swung in Kolkata's favour as Eduard Ionescu and Ayhika Mukherjee edged out Snehit and Prithika 2-1 (7-11, 11-10, 11-6). Pune's Omar Assar then came from a game down to defeat Ionescu 2-1 (5-11, 11-6, 11-4), restoring parity and setting up the tense finale that Kotecha ultimately settled.

Delhi Stage Comeback to Down UP Prometheans

UP Prometheans made the stronger start in the first tie of the day. Star Indian paddler Manav Thakkar defeated Egypt's Youssef Abdelaziz 2-1 (11-8, 11-5, 10-11) to hand UP an early lead. Delhi responded through Spanish star Maria Xiao, who overcame Australia's Yangzi Liu 2-1 (11-6, 11-7, 4-11) to level the contest.

Xiao then combined with Sathiyan Gnanasekaran to dominate the mixed doubles, defeating Thakkar and Liu in straight games 3-0 (11-9, 11-7, 11-5) and putting Delhi ahead 2-1. Gnanasekaran extended the lead further with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Germany's Ricardo Walther (11-8, 11-6, 6-11). Sayali Wani kept UP in the hunt by edging past Divyanshi Bhowmick 2-1 (9-11, 11-5, 11-10), but it was not enough to prevent Delhi's 9-6 victory.

TTR System Debuts in India

The Table Tennis Review (TTR) system, introduced in Butterfly UTT Season 7, was used for the first time in India during the Delhi vs UP tie. Thakkar challenged a serve by Abdelaziz for ball visibility and ball hiding. His first two TTR appeals were successful, allowing him to retain all three allotted unsuccessful reviews. His third appeal, however, was ruled unsuccessful, with the review confirming the ball remained visible in accordance with regulations.

Awards and Junior Results

Maria Xiao was named the ChatGPT Match IQ Player of the Tie for her outstanding performance across singles and doubles. Ricardo Walther earned the Bisleri Shot of the Tie award for his superb 11-6 run in the third game against Gnanasekaran.

In the Dream UTT Juniors competition running alongside Season 7, U Mumba TT registered a 5-4 win over Dempo Goa Challengers, while HVR Kolkata ThunderBlades recorded a 5-4 triumph against Ahmedabad APL Pipers. With two results going their way on opening day, Kolkata's momentum across both senior and junior formats will be closely watched as UTT Season 7 unfolds.
