Berlin, Sep 11 (NationPress) VfL Wolfsburg has bolstered its midfield by acquiring the Danish veteran Christian Eriksen on a free transfer, as announced by the Bundesliga club on Wednesday evening.
The 33-year-old midfielder, who previously played for Manchester United, has signed a two-year contract and will don the number 24 shirt.
Wolfsburg marks Eriksen's inaugural foray into German football, following his stints in the Netherlands, England, and Italy.
“Joining VfL Wolfsburg is an exciting new chapter for me in the Bundesliga,” Eriksen expressed. “The discussions with the management were incredibly positive, and I immediately felt the clear vision that [head coach] Paul Simonis has for the team. Being able to play alongside several national teammates makes this opportunity even more appealing.”
Eriksen comes to Lower Saxony with a wealth of experience, holding the record for the most international appearances for Denmark with 144 caps and 46 goals. He has participated in over 100 matches in the Champions League and Europa League, as well as over 300 appearances in the Premier League with clubs like Tottenham, Brentford, and United. He notably won the Serie A title with Inter Milan before returning to England in 2022.
Wolfsburg's sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz praised Eriksen’s arrival, calling him “a leader capable of making a significant impact both on and off the pitch.” He added, “While we focused on nurturing young talents this summer, Eriksen is an exceptional addition alongside our captain Max Arnold. His experience, technical skills, and character will be crucial, especially for our younger players.”
This transfer also reunites Eriksen with several fellow Danes. Alongside CEO Peter Christiansen, the Wolfsburg roster includes five other Denmark internationals: Joakim Maehle, Jesper Lindstrom, Andreas Skov Olsen, Adam Daghim, and Jonas Wind.
Eriksen’s career has been marked by an incredible comeback. At Euro 2020, he suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch but returned to elite football less than a year later. Since then, he has rejuvenated his career with Brentford and Manchester United before embracing this new challenge in the Bundesliga.
Eriksen could potentially make his debut this weekend when Wolfsburg faces Cologne at the Volkswagen Arena.
